झारसुगुड़ा हवाई अड्डे का नाम बदलकर 'वीर सुरेन्द्र साई हवाई अड्डा' करने के लिए मिली मंजूरी

• केंद्रीय मंत्रिमंडल ने ओड़िशा के झारसुगुड़ा हवाई अड्डे का नाम ‘वीर सुरेन्द्र साई हवाई अड्डा’ करने को 1 नवम्बर को स्वीकृति दे दी है।
• प्रधानमंत्री नरेन्द्र मोदी की अध्यक्षता में हुई केंद्रीय मंत्रिमंडल की बैठक में इस आशय के प्रस्ताव को मंजूरी दी गई।
• उल्लेखनीय है कि वीर सुरेन्द्र साई ओड़िशा के जाने-माने स्वतंत्रता सेनानी थे, जिन्होंने ब्रिटिश ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी के खिलाफ अपने जीवन का त्याग किया। उनका जन्म 1809 में संबलपुर (ओडिशा) के पास खिंडा गांव में हुआ था।
• झारसुगुड़ा हवाई अड्डे को नया नाम देने को लेकर ओडिशा सरकार और स्थानीय लोग काफी समय से मांग कर रहे थे।

धर्म गार्जियन-2018: भारत-जापान संयुक्त सैन्य अभ्यास

• भारत और जापान सैन्‍य सहयोग को बढ़ावा देने के लिए प्रथम संयुक्‍त सैन्‍य अभ्‍यास ‘धर्म गार्जियन-2018’ का 01 नवम्‍बर से 14 नवम्‍बर 2018 तक भारत के वैरेंटे में स्थित काउंटर इन्‍सर्जेंसी वारफेयर स्‍कूल में आयोजन कर रहा है।
• इस सैन्‍य अभ्‍यास में भारतीय सेना और जापान ग्राउंड सेल्‍फ डिफेंस फोर्स भाग ले रहे हैं।
• भारतीय दल का प्रतिनिधित्‍व 6/1 गोरखा रायफल्‍स और जापानी दल का प्रतिनिधित्‍व  जापान ग्राउंड सेल्‍फ डिफेंस फोर्स की 32 इन्‍फैंट्री रेजीमेंट ने किया।
• इस दौरान दोनों पक्ष शहरों में युद्ध जैसी स्थिति बनने पर संभावित खतरों के निराकरण के लिए अनगिनत सामरिक सैन्‍य अभ्‍यास के लिए संयुक्‍त रूप से प्रशिक्षण की व्‍यवस्‍था एवं योजना बनाने के साथ-साथ उनका समुचित कार्यान्‍वयन भी करेंगे।

          ये होगा फायदा

• इस सैन्‍य अभ्‍यास से पारंस्‍परिक समझ विकसित करने और एक दूसरे की सेनाओं के प्रति सम्‍मान भाव उत्‍पन्‍न करने में काफी मदद मिलेगी।
• इससे आतंकवाद से जुड़े वैश्विक घटनाक्रम पर करीबी नजर रखने में भी आसानी होगी।

SCO देशों के साथ संयुक्त अभ्यास में शामिल होगा भारत

• भारत SCO के सदस्य देशों के साथ आगामी फरवरी में शहरी क्षेत्रों में भूकंप से बचाव पर संयुक्त अभ्यास में शामिल होगा।
• यह अभ्यास 21 से 24 फरवरी 2019 तक राजधानी दिल्ली में आयोजित किया जाएगा।
• इसके मद्देनजर राष्ट्रीय आपदा प्रतिक्रिया बल (NDRF) ने 1 नवंबर से दो दिवसीय बैठक का आयोजन किया, इसमें आठ देश भारत, चीन, कजाखस्तान, किर्गिस्तान, पाकिस्तान, रूस, ताजिकिस्तान और उजबेकिस्तान शामिल हैं।
• राष्ट्रीय आपदा प्रबंधन प्राधिकरण (एनडीएमए) के सदस्य आरके जैन ने कहा कि शंघाई सहयोग संगठन (SCO) के सदस्य देशों के आपदा रोकथाम विभागों के प्रमुखों की 9वीं बैठक केंद्रीय गृह मंत्री राजनाथ सिंह की अध्यक्षता में अगस्त, 2017 को किर्गिस्तान में आयोजित हुई थी, लेकिन इस बार भारत में यह बैठक आयोजित की जा रही है।
• आरके जैन ने कहा कि आपदाओं की चुनौतियां सभी देशों के लिए समान है और यदि आपदाओं के जोखिम में कमी आती है तो इससे सभी को फायदा होगा।

भारत ने वेस्टइंडीज के खिलाफ पांच मैचों की एकदिवसई सीरीज़ 3-1 से जीती

• भारत बनाम वेस्टइंडीज के बीच खेले गए एकदिवसई सीरीज का पांचवां और आखिरी मुकाबला भारत ने 9 विकेट से जीत लिया।
• यह मैच तिरुवनंतपुरम के ग्रीनफील्ड अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्टेडियम में खेला गया था।
• बता दें, भारत ने वेस्ट इंडीज टीम को 9 विकेट से हराकर 3-1 से सीरीज पर कब्जा किया है।
• भारतीय टीम की ओर से रोहित शर्मा ने सर्वाधिक 63 रन बनाए. रोहित शर्मा के नाम एक और रिकॉर्ड दर्ज हो गया है। वह साल 2018 में 1000 रन पूरा करने वाले तीसरे क्रिकेटर बन गए हैं।

• कतर अगले वर्ष विश्व कॉर्पोरेट खेलों के 23वें संस्करण की मेजबानी करेगा।
• यह पहली बार है जब विश्व कॉर्पोरेट खेलों मध्य पूर्व में आयोजित किया जाएगा।
• खेल आयोजन हर एक से दो साल में होता है और अंतिम संस्करण पिछले साल अमेरिका में ह्यूस्टन में आयोजित किया गया था।
• लगभग 30 साल पहले स्थापित विश्व कॉर्पोरेट खेलों का उद्देश्य स्थानीय, क्षेत्रीय और अंतरराष्ट्रीय व्यापार खेल समुदाय को एक साथ लाना है।

राजस्थान प्रयोगशाला ने ई-क्रैकर्स विकसित किया

• राजस्थान के झुनझुनू जिले में एक केंद्र संचालित प्रयोगशाला ने ई-क्रैकर्स यानी इलेक्ट्रॉनिक्स क्रैकर्स विकसित किए हैं।
• यह ई-क्रैकर्स वायु प्रदूषण को बढ़ाने वाले धुएं की जगह पारंपरिक अग्निशामक के समान प्रकाश और ध्वनि उत्पन्न करने में सक्षम हैं।
• पिलानी में सेंट्रल इलेक्ट्रॉनिक्स इंजीनियरिंग रिसर्च इंस्टीट्यूट (सीईईआरआई) के वैज्ञानिकों ने हाल ही में बैटरी-वाले ई-क्रैकर्स, फायरक्रैकर्स के इलेक्ट्रॉनिक संस्करण की चार किस्में विकसित की हैं।
• सीईईआरआई, वैज्ञानिक और औद्योगिक अनुसंधान परिषद (सीएसआईआर) के अधीन है, इसने 4 नवंबर को लोगों को पिलानी परिसर में अपना प्रदर्शन देखने के लिए आमंत्रित किया है।
• सीईईआरआई के निदेशक संतानु चौधरी ने कहा कि ई-क्रैकर विभिन्न तरह की रोशनी और ध्वनियां उत्पन्न करता है और पुन: प्रयोज्य भी है।
• इसमें एक रिचार्जेबल बैटरी का उपयोग किया गया है और यह पूरी तरह से सुरक्षित है।

          वैज्ञानिक और औद्योगिक अनुसंधान परिषद

• वैज्ञानिक एवं औद्योगिक अनुसंधान परिषद भारत का सबसे बड़ा विज्ञान एवं प्रौद्योगिकी पर अनुसंधान एवं विकास संबंधी संस्थान है।

• पलाऊ अपने कमजोर प्रवाल चट्टानों की रक्षा के प्रयास में सनस्क्रीन पर व्यापक प्रतिबंध लगाने के लिए पहला देश बनने वाला है।
• सरकार ने एक ऐसे कानून पर हस्ताक्षर किए हैं जो सनस्क्रीन और स्किनकेयर उत्पादों की बिक्री और उपयोग को प्रतिबंधित करता है।
• शोधकर्ताओं का मानना है कि ये अवयव समुद्री जीवन के लिए अत्यधिक जहरीले हैं, और मूंगा को ब्लीचिंग के लिए अतिसंवेदनशील बना सकते हैं।

Jharsuguda Airport renamed as “Veer Surendra Sai Airport

The Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 01 Nov approved renaming of the Jharsuguda Airport (Odisha) as ‘Veer Surendra Sai Airport’.
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had earlier written to PM Modi urging the latter to name Jharsuguda Airport after freedom fighter Veer Surendra Sai.

Surendra Sai

• Surendra Sai was a freedom fighter who sacrificed his life fighting against the British East India Company.
• He was successful in defending western Odisha for some time falling in the hands of Britishers.
• He was born into a triable family in a village Khinda near Sambalpur (Odisha) in 1809.
• He began protesting British at the age of 18 in 1827 and continued to fight till his surrender in 1862.
• The airport naming upon him is a recognition to his selfless service for the country.
• Jharsuguda is the only second city having airport after Biju Patnaik Airport in Bhuvneshwar.

DHARMA GUARDIAN 2018: Indo-Japan Joint Military Exercise

India and Japan began their first ever joint military exercise on 1st Nov in Mizoram’s Vairengte with a focus on strengthening counter-terror cooperation.
This two week military exercise has been named as DHARMA GUARDIAN 2018.The Japanese contingent is represented by 32nd Infantry Battalion, while the Indian side by Gorkha Rifles.
India and Japan in a global turmoil have recently stepped up their bilateral relations in many areas including defence. During the Indian PM’s visit to Japan, a hefty $75 billion currency swap arrangement was signed which would certainly help in cooling off the pressure on falling rupees.
Japan doesn’t have a strong army and is almost dependent on the USA for its security. However, an assertive China is making Japan to slowly forging greater military cooperation with other countries such as India.

"SCO Joint Exercise on Urban Earthquake Search & Rescue -2019” Begins

India on 1 Nov began a preparatory meet for the first phase of main Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) joint 2019 exercise with all eight member countries.
The representatives of the SCO member countries -- India, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan -- attended the two-day meet for the main exercise on 'Urban Earthquaqe Search and Rescue' scheduled between February 21 and 24.
The SCO exercise would be held in Delhi, with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) having been entrusted with the responsibility to organise it.

Earthquake Zone in India

The Bureau of Indian Standards has classified regions in India into four seismic zones on the basis of historical seismic activity. These are zones II, III, IV and V. Among these, Zone V is the most seismically active region and zone II is the least active. According to Modified Mercalli scale, the seismic zone intensity are classified as zone II (low intensity zone), zone III (moderate intensity zone), zone IV (severe intensity zone) and zone V (very severe intensity zone).
Zone V includes entire northeastern India, parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, parts of North Bihar and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
Zone-IV includes the remaining parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Delhi-NCR region, Sikkim, northern parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal, parts of Gujarat and small portions of Maharashtra near the west coast and Rajasthan also fall in this zone.

India clinches PayTM Series against West Indies 3-1

India has won the PayTM ODI series against West Indies by 3-1. The matches were held in India.
The Man of the Series award was given to Indian Captain Virat Kohli.

Qatar to host World Corporate Games 2019

Qatar will host the 23rd edition of the World Corporate Games in 2019. The Games, making maiden appearance in the Middle East, will provide an opportunity for corporations around the world to showcase their competitive prowess through sports.
The World Corporate Games, established nearly 30 years ago, aims to bring together, the local, regional and international business sporting community.

Amid ‘green cracker’ pitch, Rajasthan lab comes up with e-crackers

Scientists at the Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute (CEERI) in Pilani have recently developed four varieties of battery-fitted e-crackers, the electronic version of firecrackers.
A Centre-run laboratory in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu district has developed e-crackers that produce the same light and sound as traditional firecrackers without emitting any of the hazardous smoke that spike air pollution.
The institute, which is under the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), has invited people to see its demonstration on the Pilani campus on November 4.
It is a welcome innovation as people who love the sound and lights emitting from firecrackers can switch to e-crackers. Supreme Court has issued direction last month to burst the crackers in Delhi-NCR only for two hours (8-10 PM) due to rising severe air pollution. National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) has also come up with the Green Firecrackers. Green firecrackers would refer to products that do not contain metals such as barium, aluminium and iron which create toxic gases.

60 percent of animal population wiped out in 44 years by human activity: WWF

From 1970 to 2014, 60 per cent of all animals with a backbone -- fish, birds, amphibians, reptiles and mammals -- were wiped out by human activity, according to WWF’s “Living Planet” report.

The new estimate of the massacre of wildlife is made in a major report produced by WWF and involving 59 scientists from across the globe. It finds that the vast and growing consumption of food and resources by the global population is destroying the web of life, billions of years in the making, upon which human society ultimately depends for clean air, water and everything else.
Global wildlife population shrank by 60% between 1970 and 2014.
Declines are worst in the tropics, according to the data, as South and Central America saw an 89% decrease. Also, freshwater species saw an 83% drop, threatened by factors including overfishing, pollution and climate change.
The report estimates that only a quarter of the world’s land is untouched by humans, who are increasing food production and use of natural resources.
Since 1960, the global ecological footprint has increased by more than 190%. Globally, the extent of wetlands was estimated to have declined by 87% since 1970.
The two key drivers of biodiversity loss were the over exploitation of natural resources and agriculture.
The report notes that India’s soil biodiversity is in grave peril. The WWF’s ‘risk index’ for the globe — indicating threats from loss of above-ground diversity, pollution and nutrient over-loading, over-grazing, intensive agriculture, fire, soil erosion, desertification and climate change — shows India among countries whose soil biodiversity faces the highest level of risk.
The world’s nations are working towards a crunch meeting of the UN’s Convention on Biological Diversity in 2020, when new commitments for the protection of nature will be made.

Palau to ban sunscreen as it tries to save its coral reefs

Palau is set to become the first country to impose a widespread ban on sunscreen in an effort to protect its vulnerable coral reefs.
The government has signed a law that restricts the sale and use of sunscreen and skincare products that contain a list of ten different chemicals.
Researchers believe that these ingredients are highly toxic to marine life, and can make coral more susceptible to bleaching.
The ban comes into force in 2020.

How do sunscreen products harm corals?

Scientists are concerned about mainly two ingredients oxybenzone and octinoxate. These are used as sun protection factors as they absorb ultraviolet light. However, they are believed to make coral more susceptible to bleaching. Research published in 2015 showed that the oxybenzone could stunt the growth of baby corals and was toxic to several different coral species in laboratory tests.

What are the main threats to corals?

Researchers say that the biggest threat to coral reefs is climate change, with estimates that 90% of reefs will succumb to rising temperatures by 2050.
The second biggest threat is the suffocating threat posed by algal blooms, triggered by the runoff of nutrients from sewage and farming.
Sunscreen is now seen as one of a number of other, lesser threats including ocean acidification.

Palau is located in the western part of the Pacific Ocean. It is made up of one large volcanic island and several smaller coral reef associated islands. Despite its small size, it has often taken big steps in protecting the environment.

• पलाऊ देशाने प्रवाळी प्रदेशाचे (coral reef) संरक्षण करण्याच्या प्रयत्नात प्रवाळाला विषारी ठरणार्‍या सनस्क्रीनवर बंदी घालण्याचा निर्णय घेतला आहे. दिनांक 1 जानेवारी 2020 पासून ही बंदी लागू करणार आहे.
• रासायनिक प्रदूषणापासून प्रवाळी प्रदेशाचे संरक्षण करण्यासाठी जगात घेतला गेलेला हा पहिलाच पुढाकार आहे. पलाऊला जगातले सर्वोत्तम डायविंग गंतव्यांपैकी एक मानले जाते.
• पलाऊ हा 500 प्रशांत बेटांचा एक द्वीपसमूह आहे, जो पश्चिम प्रशांत महासागरामधील मायक्रोनेशिया प्रदेशाचा भाग आहे. नगरुलमड ही देशाची राजधानी आहे आणि युनायटेड स्टेट्स डॉलर हे राष्ट्रीय चलन आहे. पलाऊमध्ये 2009 साली जगातले पहिले शार्क अभयारण्य तयार करण्यात आले.

PayTM ODI मालिकेमध्ये भारताचा विजय

• केरळच्या तिरुवनंतपूरम येथे खेळली गेलेली PayTM प्रायोजित पाच दिवसांची एकदिवसीय आंतरराष्ट्रीय (ODI) सामन्यांची मालिका भारताने जिंकलेली आहे. भारताने वेस्ट इंडीजचा पराभव केला आहे.
• भारताच्या रविंद्र जडेजाला सामनावीर तर विराट कोहलीला मालिकावीर पुरस्काराने सन्मानित केले गेले. भारतासाठी हा सन 2015 नंतरचा मायदेशातील सलग सहावा मालिकाविजय ठरला आहे.

कतारकडे ‘विश्व कॉर्पोरेट खेळ 2019’ याचे यजमानपद

• कतारकडे 23व्या ‘विश्व कॉर्पोरेट खेळ’ याचे यजमानपद देण्यात आले आहे. दिनांक 6 नोव्हेंबर ते 9 नोव्हेंबर 2019 या कालावधीत या खेळांचे आयोजन केले जाणार आहे.
• प्रथमच ‘स्पोर्ट्स फॉर लाइफ’ तर्फे यावर्षी ‘विश्व कॉर्पोरेट खेळ’ यांचे आयोजन मध्य-पूर्व क्षेत्रात आयोजित करण्यात येणार आहे.

विज्ञान आणि पर्यावरण

CSIR-CEERI ने 'हरित फटाके' विकसित केलीत

• राजस्थानच्या सेंट्रल इलेक्ट्रॉनिक्स इंजिनियरिंग रिसर्च इन्स्टिट्यूट (CSIR-CEERI, पिलानी) येथील शास्त्रज्ञांनी चार प्रकारचे बॅटरी-आधारित इलेक्ट्रॉनिक क्रॅकर (ई-क्रॅकर / ई-फटाके) विकसित केली आहेत.
• हे फटाके प्रकाश/ध्वनी याचा प्रभाव उत्पन्न करण्यासाठी उच्च-व्होल्टेज इलेक्ट्रोस्टॅटिक डिस्चार्जच्या तंत्रज्ञानावर आधारित आहे, जे इलेक्ट्रिक स्पार्क उत्पन्न करतात. ई-लडी, ई-अनार, ई-क्रॅकरसाठी तंत्र इत्यादी विविध उत्पादनांना विकसित केले आहे.
• नव्या फटाक्यांमुळे कमी धूर होता आणि ते कमी आवाज करतात. या फटाक्यांना पेट्रोलियम अँड एक्सप्लोसिव्ह सेफ्टी ऑर्गनायझेशन (PESO) कडून मान्यता मिळाली आहे आणि या वर्षीपासून हे हरित फटाके बाजारात येणार.
• वैज्ञानिक व औद्योगिक संशोधन परिषद (CSIR) ही भारत सरकारच्या विज्ञान व तंत्रज्ञान मंत्रालयाची एक स्वायत्त संस्था आहे. याची स्थापना 26 सप्टेंबर 1942 रोजी करण्यात आली. याच्या देशभरात 39 प्रयोगशाळा (ज्यात 5 क्षेत्रीय संशोधन प्रयोगशाळा) आणि 50 क्षेत्रीय केंद्रे आहेत.

“धर्म गार्डियन-2018”: प्रथम भारत-जपान संयुक्त लष्करी सराव

• दिनांक 1 नोव्हेंबर ते 14 नोव्हेंबर या कालावधीत भारतात वेरंगटे (मिझोरम) येथे “धर्म गार्डियन-2018” या नावाखाली भारत आणि जपान यांचा प्रथम संयुक्त लष्करी सराव आयोजित करण्यात आला आहे.
• जपान प्रशांत महासागर प्रदेशातला एक बेट राष्ट्र आहे. या देशाची राजधानी टोकियो हे शहर आहे आणि जपानी येन हे राष्ट्रीय चलन आहे.
