    Mount Deotibba Expedition-2018
    • All women high altitude expedition to Mount Deotibba (6001 Mtrs) which is located in Himachal Pradesh, has been organised by the Indian Navy from 28 May to 15 Jun 2018.
    • The expedition will be flagged off by Vice Admiral AK Chawla, AVSM, NM, VSM, Chief of Personnel on 28 May 2018 from New Delhi.
    • Lieutenant Commander Kokila Sajwan will be leading the team which comprises of 15 members including two base camp support staff.
    • The Service had previously launched the first successful expedition to Everest in 1965 and has been to the South & North poles in 2006 and 2008 respectively.
    • With the culmination of Sagar-Parikarma, the circumnavigation around the globe by All Women Navy Team, Indian Navy seeks to achieve a similar feat on land by organising an ‘All Women Expedition to Mt Deotibba as a launch pad for scaling higher peaks including Everest in near future.

    Pakistan appoints former chief justice Nasir Ul Mulk as interim PM
    • Former chief justice Nasir-ul-Mulk has been named Pakistan’s caretaker prime minister to oversee the general election scheduled for July 25.
    • Pakistan is set to hold a general election on July 25 to choose representatives for the National Assembly and four provincial assemblies. The tenure of the present government ends on May 31.
    • Nasir-ul-Mulk was made the 22nd chief justice in 2014. He belongs to Mingora town in Swat.
    • He is remembered for the way he conducted a contempt case against then prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani.
    Nagpur-based NEERI come up with the idea to clean garbage in lakes
    • The Nagpur-based National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) has come up with a novel idea to clean the garbage dumped in lakes.
    • The NEERI method is based on floating cycle, which gathers garbage while moving around in the water body.
    • The cycle is equipped with a propeller and paddle wheel at the back churns water providing aeration for the water body, thus increasing the dissolved oxygen level.
    • The first demonstration was given to clean the skimming debris of the Futala Lake in Nagpur. The lake is spread over 60 acres. Built by Bhosle kings of Nagpur, the lake is known for its coloured fountains. .
    • The CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI) is a research institute created and funded by Government of India.
    • It was established in Nagpur in 1958 and has five zonal laboratories at Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai.
    TN govt. orders permanent closure of Sterlite copper plant in Thuthukkudi
    • The Tamil Nadu government ordered the closure of the Sterlite Copper factory in Thoothukudi,
    • The government order endorsed the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board’s directive last week to close the unit citing constitutional provisions to “protect and improve the environment,” and “in larger public interest.”
    • It a significant setback for the Anil Agarwal-owned Vedanta which is at the centre of a violent agitation led by residents who claim the smelter has caused widespread pollution of air and water in the southern city.
    • Sterlite Copper is a unit of Vedanta Ltd which operates a 400,000-tonne per annum capacity plant. 
    Virat Kohli named International Cricketer of the Year at CEAT Cricket Ratings awards
    • India skipper Virat Kohli  won the International Cricketer of the Year Award at the CEAT Cricket Ratings awards 
    • India opener Shikhar Dhawan was presented the International Batsman of the Year Award, while New Zealand pace sensation Trent Boult won the International Bowler of the Year Award.
    • Afghanistan's leg spinner Rashid Khan, who impressed with his skills in Indian Premier League grabbing 21 wickets, was presented with the T20 Bowler of the Year Award.
    • Eighteen-year-old Shubhman Gill, who made his mark in the U19 World Cup in Australia and the IPL while playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders, was the U19 Player of the Year.
    • CEAT Cricket Ratings (CCR) was formed in 1995 in association with Professional Management Group.
    • Three cricketing legends Clive Lloyd, Ian Chappell and Sunil Gavaskar are the members of the Governing Council of the CRR
    • It is the first International Cricket Rating System to reward and recognize the performances on annual basis.
    Cochin International Airport world's first fully solar-energy powered airport: UNEP
    • The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has recognised Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) in Kerala as the world’s first fully solar energy powered Airport.
    • CIAL is India’s first airport to be constructed in public-private-partnership (PPP) model in 1999.
    • The airport has a 12 MWp solar power plant comprising of 46,150 solar panels laid across 45 acres. It produces 50,000 to 60,000 units of electricity per day.
    Himachal govt launches 'Prakriti Kheti Khushhaal Kisaan Yojana'
    • In order to encourage 'Zero budget Natural Farming' in the state, a new scheme  'Prakritik Kheti-Khushhal Kisan' was launched in Himachal with a budget provision of Rs. 25 crore.
    • Under the scheme farmers would be provided training, necessary equipments, bio-pesticides, bio-insecticides, etc.
    • An allocation of  Rs. 25 crore has been made for the Scheme which would encourage organic farming  and reduce the use of chemical fertilizers by the farmers in their fields.
    • The State universities would prepare the package of practices for its implementation.
    India, US, Japan start 22nd Malabar exercise in Guam
    • India, United States and Japan will deploy their frontline military assets off Guam in the Western Pacific from June 6 to June 15 for wide-ranging naval manoeuvres. Guam is a U.S. island territory in Micronesia, in the Western Pacific.
    • The at-sea phase is expected to cover areas such as surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, air defence, search and rescue, gunnery operations and submarine familiarization.
    • It is a setback for the India-U.S.-Australia-Japan “Quad” in the Indo-Pacific, the government has decided to go ahead with this year’s ‘Malabar’ naval exercises trilaterally without including the Australian Navy.
    • Originally a bilateral exercise between India and the United States, Japan became a permanent partner in 2015.
    • Past non-permanent participants are Australia and Singapore. The annual Malabar series began in 1992 and includes diverse activities, ranging from fighter combat operations from aircraft carriers through Maritime Interdiction Operations Exercises. 
    Sudha Balkrishnan appointed first CFO of RBI
    • Sudha Balakrishnan has been appointed the first ever chief financial officer (CFO) of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
    • Balakrishnan, a chartered accountant, was till recently vice president with the National Securities Depository Ltd (NSDL), India’s first and largest depository.
    • At the RBI, Balakrishnan will be in charge of the central bank’s balance sheet to ensure accounting policies and procedures comply with regulations. 
    • She will be in charge of the government and bank account department, which processes government transactions like payments and revenue collections such as taxes.

    Ibrahim Kassory Fofana sworn-in as PM of Guinea
    • Guinea President Alpha Conde has named Ibrahima Kassory Fofana as the country's new prime minister.
    • Fofana, a Conde loyalist and former minister of investment and public-private partnerships, replaces Mamady Youla, who resigned along with his government.
    • Guinea is a country in West Africa, bordered on the west by the Atlantic Ocean. Its capital is Conakry.

    भारतीय नौदलाची ‘देओतीब्बा पर्वत मोहीम’
    • हिमाचल प्रदेशातील देओतीब्बा (6001 मीटर) पर्वतावर चढाई करण्यासाठी सर्व स्त्री सदस्य सहभागी असलेल्या एका चमूसाठी भारतीय नौदलाने एक मोहीम आयोजित केली आहे.
    • 28 मे ते 15 जून 2018 पर्यंत चालणार्‍या या मोहिमेसाठी लेफ्टनंट कमांडर कोकीला सजवान यांच्या नेतृत्वाखाली 15 साथीदारांची चमू तयार करण्यात आली आहे.

    कोचीन आंतरराष्ट्रीय विमानतळ: संपूर्णता सौर-ऊर्जा वापरणारे जगातले पहिले विमानतळ
    • केरळमधील कोचीन आंतरराष्ट्रीय विमानतळाला संपूर्णता सौर-ऊर्जा वापरणारे जगातले पहिले विमानतळ म्हणून मान्यता देण्यात आली आहे. ही मान्यता संयुक्त राष्ट्रसंघ पर्यावरण कार्यक्रम (UNEP) कडून दिली गेली.
    • विमानतळाने 45 एकर परिसरात 15 मेगावॉट क्षमतेचा सौर प्रकल्प प्रस्थापित केलेला आहे. यापासून मिळालेल्या ऊर्जेनी विमानतळावर चालणार्‍या विद्युत उपकरणांची वीज गरज भागवली जात आहे. 
    22 वा मलबार युद्धाभ्यास: भारत, अमेरिका आणि जपान यांचा गुआममध्ये सराव
    • अमेरिकेच्या गुआम येथे 22 वा 'मलबार युद्धाभ्यास' आयोजित करण्यात आला आहे. भारत, अमेरिका आणि जपान यांच्या नौदलांचा हा संयुक्त सराव 6-16 जून 2018 या काळात होणार आहे.
    • सरावात भारताचे INS सह्याद्री, INS कामोर्तो आणि INS शक्ती ही जहाजे तसेच दीर्घ पल्ल्याचे P-8I सागरी गस्त विमान भाग घेणार आहेत. शिवाय अमेरिकेचे अणु-शक्तीवर चालणारे 100,000 टन वजनी ‘USS रोनाल्ड रेगन’ हे वाहक जहाज तर जपानचे हेलीकाप्टरवाहू जहाज आणि सोर्यू-श्रेणी पाणबुडी यांचा सहभाग असेल.
    • मलबार युद्धाभ्यास हा भारत आणि अमेरिका यांच्या नौदलांमध्ये चालणारा एक युद्ध सराव आहे. 2017 साली जपान या सरावाचा कायम भागीदार बनला. जपानचा या वर्षीचा हा दुसरा मलबार युद्धाभ्यास आहे.

    नासिर उल मुलक: पाकिस्तानचे तात्पुरते पंतप्रधान
    • पाकिस्तानच्या तात्पुरते/अंतरिम पंतप्रधान (Interim PM) पदी माजी मुख्य न्यायाधीश नासिर उल मुलक यांना नियुक्त करण्यात आले आहे. देशात 25 जुलै 2018 रोजी सार्वत्रिक निवडणूक घेतली जाणार आहे. तोपर्यंत मुलक या पदाची जबाबदारी सांभाळणार आहेत.
    • शाहिद खाकन अब्बासी यांच्या नेतृत्वात असलेल्या सरकारचा पाच वर्षांचा कार्यकाळ संपत आल्याने ही नियुक्ती करण्यात आली आहे.
    • पाकिस्तान हा दक्षिण आशियामधील एक देश आहे. पाकिस्तान हे केंद्रीय घटनात्मक प्रजासत्ताक असून देशात चार सुभे (परगणा) आणि चार केंद्रशासित प्रदेश आहेत. इस्लामाबाद ही पाकिस्तानची राजधानी आहे. पाकिस्तानी रुपया हे राष्ट्रीय चलन आहे.
    इब्राहिम कासोरी फोफाना: गिनीचे नवे पंतप्रधान
    • इब्राहिम कासोरी फोफाना यांनी गिनीच्या पंतप्रधान पदाची शपथ घेतली आहे.
    • ममाडी यूला यांच्या नेतृत्वात असलेल्या सरकारने दिलेल्या राजीनाम्यानंतर गिनीचे राष्ट्रपती अल्फा कोंडे यांनी इब्राहिम कासोरी फोफाना यांचे देशाच्या पंतप्रधान पदासाठी नामांकन दिले होते.
    • गिनी (Guinea) हा पश्चिम आफ्रिकेमधील एक देश आहे आणि याच्या पश्चिमेला अटलांटिक महासागराचा किनारा लाभलेला आहे. कोनाक्री हे देशाचे राजधानी शहर आहे आणि गिनीयन फ्रँक हे राष्ट्रीय चलन आहे.

    सुधा बालकृष्णन: RBI च्या प्रथम मुख्य वित्तीय अधिकारी (CFO)
    • सुधा बालकृष्णन यांना भारतीय रिझर्व्ह बँक (RBI) याच्या प्रथम मुख्य वित्तीय अधिकारी (chief financial officer) म्हणून नियुक्त करण्यात आले आहे. ही नेमणूक 15 मे 2018 पासून लागू करण्यात आली आहे.
    • या नियुक्तीपूर्वी सुधा बालकृष्णन नॅशनल सिक्युरिटीज डिपॉझिटरी लिमिटेड (NSDL) च्या कार्यकारी अधिकारी होत्या. त्या RBI मध्ये 12 व्या कार्यकारी संचालक असतील आणि त्यांचा कार्यकाळ तीन वर्षांचा असेल. सप्टेंबर 2016 मध्ये गव्हर्नर उर्जित पटेल पदावर आल्यानंतर ही सर्वात मोठी संस्थात्मक बदलाची घटना समजली जात आहे.
    • भारतीय रिझर्व्ह बँक (RBI) ही भारतातील केंद्रीय बँकिंग संस्था आहे, जी भारतीय रुपया चलनाचे आर्थिक धोरण नियंत्रित करते. भारतीय रिझर्व्ह बँक अधिनियम, 1934 च्या उपबंधानुसार ब्रिटिश राजवटीत संस्थेचे 1 एप्रिल 1935 पासून कार्य सुरू झाले. मूळ भागभांडवलाची प्रत्येकी 100 समभागामध्ये विभागणी झालेली आहे, जे की सुरुवातीला खाजगी भागधारकांच्या पूर्णपणे मालकीचे होते. 15 ऑगस्ट 1947 रोजी भारताच्या स्वातंत्र्यानंतर, RBI चे 1 जानेवारी 1949 रोजी राष्ट्रीयीकरण करण्यात आले.

    विज्ञान आणि तंत्रज्ञान 

    तलाव कचरा मुक्त करण्यासाठी नागपूरमधील NEERI ची नवीन पद्धत
    • नागपूरमधील CSIR च्या राष्ट्रीय पर्यावरण अभियांत्रिकी संशोधन संस्थेने (NEERI) एक अशी पद्धत विकसित केली आहे की, ज्याच्या सहाय्याने तलाव/सरोवरामध्ये टाकल्या जाणार्‍या कचर्‍याला हटवले जाऊ शकते आणि जलस्त्रोत स्वच्छ केला जाऊ शकतो. या अभिनव कल्पनेनुसार एका तरंगत्या सायकलच्या मदतीने पाण्याच्या पृष्ठभागावर तरंगता कचरा जमा केला जातो.
    • वैज्ञानिक  औद्योगिक संशोधन परिषद (CSIR) ही भारत सरकारच्या विज्ञान व तंत्रज्ञान मंत्रालयाची एक स्वायत्त संस्था आहे. याची स्थापना 26 सप्टेंबर 1942 रोजी करण्यात आली. या संस्थेमार्फत सहाय्यक प्राध्यापक तसेच कनिष्ठ संशोधन पाठ्यवृत्ती यासाठी 'राष्ट्रीय पात्रता परीक्षा (नेट)' घेतली जाते. याच्या देशभरात 39 प्रयोगशाळा (ज्यात 5 क्षेत्रीय संशोधन प्रयोगशाळा) आणि 50 क्षेत्रीय केंद्रे आहेत.

    तामिळनाडूतला स्टरलाइट कॉपर प्रकल्प कायम स्वरुपात बंद करण्याचे आदेश
    • थुथुक्कूडी जिल्ह्यातील वेदांत उद्योग समुहाच्या ‘स्टरलाइट कॉपर’ प्रकल्पाला कायमस्वरूपी बंद करण्याचा आदेश तामिळनाडू राज्य शासनाच्या पर्यावरण व वन विभागाने दिला आहे.
    • अत्याधिक प्रदूषणामुळे स्टरलाइट विरोधात अलीकडेच झालेल्या एका आंदोलनात पोलीस गोळीबारामध्ये 13 जणांचा मृत्यू झाला. या घटनेच्या पार्श्वभूमीवर राज्य शासनाने हा निर्णय घेतला. कारखाना बंद झाल्याने 2,500 कंत्राटी कर्मचार्‍यांसह सुमारे 3500 जण बेरोजगार झालेत.
    हिमाचल प्रदेश शासनाची 'प्राकृतिक खेती खुशहाल किसान योजना'
    • 28 मे 2018 रोजी हिमाचल प्रदेश राज्य शासनाने राज्याच्या 'प्राकृतिक खेती खुशहाल किसान योजना' याचा शुभारंभ केला आहे.
    • शून्य खर्चासह नैसर्गिकरीत्या शेती करण्याच्या उद्देशाने ही योजना सुरू करण्यात आली आहे. यामार्फत राज्यात जमिनीची उत्पादकता वाढविण्यासाठी औद्योगिक खतांचा आणि रसायनांचा वापर करण्यास प्रोत्साहन दिले जाईल. तसेच पाण्याची उपलब्धता वाढविण्यावर भर दिला जाईल.
