Centre launches electronic-Human Resource Management System

• An online platform has been launched for central government employees to apply for leave and access their service-related information. On the Good Governance Day, Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh launched the electronic-Human Resource Management System (e-HRMS).
• Benefits: With launch of e-HRMS, employees will be able to not only see all their details with respect to service book, leave, GPF, salary, etc. but also apply for different kind of claims/reimbursements, loan/advances, leave, leave encashment, LTC advances, tour etc. on a single platform. That will enhance public delivery and more employees will be available for the core work of the government.
• This is a step in the direction of a fully automated human resource management system with a target to bring all government employees on employee portal so that all processes of personnel management from hiring to retiring will be on digital platform and manual system of handling personnel management will be dispensed with.
• The availability of centralized data will enable government for policy research and planning as such educational qualifications and other competencies and deficiencies may be easily obtained.

Centre directs NGOs to open account in any designated bank within month

• For higher Level of transparency and hassle -free reporting compliance, centre has asked all the NGOs business entities and individuals who receive funds from abroad to open accounts in any of the 32 designated banks, within a month.
• It also asked them to ensure that such funds are not utilised for activities detrimental to the national interest.
• They directed to open foreign contribution accounts in banks, which are integrated with the central government's Public Financial Management System (PFMS).
• This exercise shall be completed expeditiously within one month (by 21-01-2018) with intimation of the details of the bank accounts to the ministry under a prescribed form.

ASEAN-India Pravasi Bharatiya Divas to be held in Singapore in January 2018

• Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean will join India's External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj for a two-day ASEAN-India Pravasi Bharatiya Divas to be held in Singapore in January 2018.
• The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is celebrated every year to mark the contribution of overseas Indian community in the development of India. These conventions provide a platform to the overseas Indian community to engage with the government and Indian communities in India for mutually beneficial activities.
• Theme: In January 2018, PBD will celebrate the ASEAN-Indian partnership and will be themed Ancient Route, New Journey: Diaspora in the Dynamic ASEAN INDIA Partnership.
• The event hopes to generate outcomes that deepen the diaspora’s relations with India and play a key role in promoting closer ties between India and ASEAN.

Guatemala to move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem

• Guatemala's president announced on Christmas Eve that the Central American country will move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, becoming the first nation to follow the lead of U.S. President Donald Trump in ordering the change.
• Guatemala was one of nine nations that voted with the United States and Israel when the U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly adopted a non-binding resolution denouncing Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
• Guatemala and Israel have long had close ties, especially in security matters and Israeli arms sales to Guatemala.
• No other country has their embassy for Israel in Jerusalem

Veteran actor Partha Mukhopadhyay passes away

• Veteran actor Partha Mukhopadhyay, who had acted in many Bengali classics, died of cardiac arrest at a city hospital on December 25, 2017. He was 70.
• Partha Mukhopadhyay: Mukhopadhyay had portrayed a number of roles in classics like Atithi, Balika Badhu, Amar Prithivi, Baghbandir Khela, Agniswar and had made his mark as a character actor in 1970s and 1980s.

Maharashtra govt. sets up 17-member development authority for Raigad fort

• The Maharashtra government has set up a 17-member development authority for the Raigad fort, capital of warrior king Shivaji, which would be headed by Rajya Sabha member Sambhaji Shahu Chhatrapati.
• The authority will finalise a development plan for the Raigad fort and surrounding areas, including the memorial of Shivaji's mother, Jijabai.
• Sambhaji Shahu Chhatrapati: Sambhaji Shahu Chhatrapati is a member of the former royal family of Kolhapur and king Shivaji's descendant. He has been appointed to the Upper House of Parliament from the President's quota.

CM Yogi Adityanath announces new Metro projects for Agra & Kanpur in UP

• Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on 25 December 2017, announced new Metro projects for Agra and Kanpur.
• Two major expressways are also being planned in the Uttar Pradesh. The govt. is taking public welfare projects on a priority basis.  
• Referring to issue of real estate developers leaving projects unfinished much to agony of home-buyers, the UP chief minister said that builders had promised to handover 80,000 apartments to consumers in the next six months.

India rise to second spot in latest ICC T-20 rankings

• In the latest ICC T20I rankings, India have surged to the second position. Following their 3-0 clean-sweep of Sri Lanka in the recently completed series, the 'Men in Blue' gained two rating points to vault upwards in the rankings table.
• Before the 3-match home series against Sri Lanka, India were stationed at fifth spot in the T20I rankings table, with 119 rating points.
• With 124 rating points, Pakistan continue to be the number one ranked team in the shortest format of the game. Having amassed 121 rating points, India is closing in on the heels of their arch-rivals.

A new species of Scorpio found in Tripura

• Scientists have discovered the eleventh wood scorpion species, the Schaller’s wood scorpion from Tripura’s Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary.
• Also called dwarf scorpions, wood scorpions are unlike the large scorpions we commonly see. Wood scorpions are only about three cm long and live in small burrows on the ground, making them very difficult to spot.
• A detailed examination of the arachnids showed they were distinctly different from other recorded wood scorpions — the mid-portion of their pincers was differently-shaped as was the placement of their eyes, and they were far darker.
• Mr. Mirza named the new species Liocheles schalleri in honour of celebrated wildlife biologist George Schaller who has studied wildlife across the world.

Brand Bengaluru gets its own logo

• Bengaluru becomes India's first city to have its own logo, just like New York, Paris. All the cultural events and important public services will be marked with this new logo of Bengaluru
• The tagline 'Bengaluru - Be U' (be you) is expected to build the city's image on the global stage.  The logo unveiled on the grand steps of Vidhan soudha in Bangalore is a 180 degree straight line with Bengaluru amalgamated in Kannada and English.
• The Karnataka Department of Tourism led by Minister Priyank Kharge said the logo would be used to enhance tourism in Karnataka.
