राष्ट्रपति ने बीएआरसी द्वारा विकसित दुबराज चावल की एक म्युटेंट किस्म का उद्घाटन किया:

• राष्ट्रपति राम नाथ कोविंद ने 15 मई 2018 को प्रतिष्ठित भाभा परमाणु अनुसंधान केंद्र (बीएआरसी) द्वारा विकसित दुबराज उत्परिवर्ती (म्युटेंट) चावल (ट्रॉम्बे छत्तीसगढ़ दुबराज उत्परिवर्ती -1) का उद्घाटन किया।
• यह बीएआरसी द्वारा विकसित 43वीं उच्च उपज वाली फसल किस्म है।

राष्‍ट्रपति रामनाथ कोविंद सर्विस सेक्‍टर से जुड़े 12 अव्‍वल (चैंपियन) क्षेत्रों पर एक पोर्टल को लांच किया:

• राष्‍ट्रपति रामनाथ कोविंद ने 15 मई, 2018 को मुम्‍बई में आयोजित ‘सेवाओं पर चौथी वैश्विक प्रदर्शनी’ का उद्घाटन किया और सर्विस सेक्‍टर से जुड़े 12 अव्‍वल (चैंपियन) क्षेत्रों पर एक पोर्टल को लांच किया। इस वैश्विक प्रदर्शनी में तकरीबन 100 देशों के लगभग 500 अंतर्राष्‍ट्रीय प्रतिनिधि भाग ले रहे हैं।
• सर्विस सेक्‍टर या सेवा क्षेत्र वैश्विक अर्थव्‍यवस्‍था के एक जीवंत एवं विस्‍तृत घटक का प्रतिनिधित्‍व करता है। आज सेवा क्षेत्र ने रोजगार, मूल्‍य वर्द्धन, उत्‍पादकता और नवाचार की दृष्टि से अपना वर्चस्‍व स्‍थापित कर लिया है।
• भारत में सर्विस सेक्‍टर सकल मूल्‍य वर्द्धित में 61 प्रतिशत का योगदान करता है। अपनी युवा आबादी, बड़ी संख्‍या में प्रतिभाशाली व्‍यक्तियों की उपलब्‍धता और प्रौद्योगिकी के इस्‍तेमाल में अत्‍यंत सहज रहने की क्षमता की बदौलत भारत को इस क्षेत्र या सेक्‍टर में स्‍वाभाविक बढ़त हासिल है और आने वाले समय में भारत द्वारा पूरी दुनिया को विभिन्‍न सेवाएं मुहैया कराना तय है।

अंतर्राष्ट्रीय

यूएस-दक्षिण कोरिया की संयुक्त सैन्य ड्रिल 'मैक्स थंडर' शुरू:

• उत्तर कोरिया ने साउथ कोरिया से होने वाली अपनी उच्च स्तरीय वार्ता को रद्द कर दिया है। उत्तर कोरिया ने अमेरिका और दक्षिण कोरिया की वायुसेना के संयुक्त सैन्य अभ्यास 'मैक्स थंडर' को इस कदम के लिए जिम्मेदार बताया है।
• यह वार्ता किम जोंग उन और साउथ कोरिया के राष्ट्रपति मून जे-इन के बीच पिछले महीने हुई वार्ता को आगे बढ़ाने के क्रम में होने वाली थी।
• यूएस-दक्षिण कोरिया संयुक्त सैन्य अभ्यास "मैक्स थंडर" वर्ष 2009 में दोनों देशों की वायु सेनाओं के बीच बेहतर समन्वय के उद्देश्य से शुरू किया गया था। इस बार यह अभ्यास 15 दिन तक (11 से 25 मई) तक चलेगा।

अमेरिका ने औपचारिक रूप से यरूशलेम में अपने दूतावास का उद्घाटन किया:

• अरब देशों के विरोध को दरकिनार करते हुए अमेरिका ने अपना दूतावास तेल अवीव से हटाकर यरूशलेम में खोल दिया है। अमेरिका के इस फैसले से फिलिस्तीनियों में तनाव फ़ैल गया जिसके फलस्वरूप भीषण हिंसा भड़क गयी है।
• संयुक्त राष्ट्र सुरक्षा परिषद की गाजा-इस्राइल सीमा पर हुई हिंसक घटनाओं पर चर्चा करने के लिए एक आपातकालीन बैठक हुई है।
• डोनाल्ड ट्रम्प ने दिसम्बर में अपना दूतावास तेल अवीव से हटाकर यरूशलेम में स्थानांतरित करने की घोषणा की थी। यह घोषणा इसलिए की गई थी क्योंकि ट्रम्प ने यरूशलेम को इजराइल की औपचारिक राजधानी भी घोषित किया था।

भारत ने तटबंध निर्माण के लिए नेपाल को अनुदान दिया:

• भारत ने नेपाल की बागमती तथा कमला नदी के जलभराव वाले क्षेत्रों में रहने वाले लाखों लोगों को लाभ पहुंचाने के लिए नेपाल सरकार को लालबकेया में तटबंध बनाने और उससे संबंधित प्रशिक्षण के लिए 18.07 करोड़ रुपए की सहायता राशि मुहैया कराई है।
• यह राशि लालबकेय में बागमती तथा कमला नदी में तटबंधों के निर्माण, इससे संबंधित प्रशिक्षण,बाढ़ नियंत्रण और जल संसाधन प्रबंधन के लिए दिया गया है। भारत सरकार ने वर्ष 2008 से नेपाल को नदी प्रशिक्षण तथा तटबंध निर्माण के लिए 13 किश्तों में कुल 468 रुपए दिए हैं।

अर्थव्यवस्था

भारत विश्व में तीसरा सबसे बड़ा सौर बाजार: मरकॉम

• भारत सौर ऊर्जा के मामले में वर्ष 2017 में विश्व के तीसरे सबसे बड़े बाजार के रूप में उभरा है और इस मामले में वह सिर्फ चीन तथा अमेरिका से पीछे है। मरकॉम कम्युनिकेशंस इंडिया की एक रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, ‘‘वर्ष 2017 में भारत तीसरा सबसे बड़ा सौर बाजार के रूप में उभरा है। वर्ष 2010 से संचयी रूप से करीब 170 प्रतिशत बढ़ा है।’’
• भारत ने 2017 में रिकार्ड 9600 मेगावाट क्षमता की सौर परियोजनाएं लगायी। यह 2016 में 4300 मेगावाट के मुकाबले दोगुने से अधिक है। रिपोर्ट में कहा गया है कि मजबूत वृद्धि से देश की सौर ऊर्जा की स्थापित क्षमता दिसंबर 2017 की स्थिति के अनुसार 19,600 मेगावाट हो गयी।
• देश में छतों पर लगने वाली कुल 1600 मेगावाट क्षमता की परियोजनाओं में से 995 मेगावाट की स्थापना पिछले साल की गयी। मरकॉम कम्युनिकेशंस इंडिया वैश्विक स्वच्छ ऊर्जा परामर्श कंपनी मरकॉम कैपिटल ग्रुप की इकाई है।

सरकारी चीनी बैंक ने भारत-समर्पित निवेश कोष का शुभारंभ किया:

• सरकारी चीनी बैंक, इंडस्ट्रियल एंड कमर्शियल बैंक ऑफ चाइना (आईसीबीसी) ने देश का पहला भारत-समर्पित सार्वजनिक रूप से प्रस्तावित निवेश फंड शुरू किया है।
• इसके अनुसार, भारतीय बाजार दो अंकों के विकास की संभावनाओं के कारण चीनी निवेशकों के लिए सबसे अच्छा अवसर प्रदान कर सकता है। आईसीबीसी क्रेडिट सुइस इंडिया मार्केट फंड नामक यह फंड, यूरोप और अमेरिका में 20 से अधिक भारतीय बाजार पर आधारित एक्सचेंजों पर सूचीबद्ध एक्सचेंज ट्रेडेड फंडों में निवेश करेगा।
• यह भारत में निवेश के लिए चीन का पहला सार्वजनिक रूप से प्रस्तावित फंड है। यह फंड भारतीय अर्थव्यवस्था के भविष्य में निवेश करेगा और भारतीय बाजार में औद्योगिक संरचना के वितरण को ट्रैक करेगा।

विज्ञान एवं प्रौद्योगकी

वैज्ञानिकों ने फिंगरपिंग सिस्टम विकसित किया:

• वैज्ञानिकों ने विशेष प्रकार के स्मार्ट रिंग और रिस्टबैंड विकसित किए हैं, जिनके जरिये यूजर्स हाथों के इशारे का इस्तेमाल कर मोबाइल पर टाइप कर सकते हैं।
• रिंग और रिस्टबैंड में लगी एक खास तरह की चिप में मौजूद ध्वनिक तरंगे 22 विभिन्न सूक्ष्म उंगली संकेतों को पहचानने में सक्षम है, जिसे कई आदेशों के लिए प्रोग्राम किया जा सकता है।
• इसमें टी 9 कीबोर्ड इंटरफेस, संख्याओं का एक सेट व एप्लीकेशंस कमांड जैसे म्यूजिक प्ले और स्टॉप शामिल हैं। यह तकनीक अमेरिकी साइन लैंग्वेज में उंगलियों की 12 हड्डियों के माध्यम से 1 से 10 तक की गिनती सटीक रूप से पहचान सकती है।
• जॉर्जिया टेक के पीएचडी के छात्र चेंग जांग ने यह तकनीक विकसित की है। इस सिस्टम को फिंगरपिंग सिस्टम नाम दिया गया है।

व्यक्ति विशेष

शशांक मनोहर को दूसरे कार्यकाल के लिए आईसीसी अध्यक्ष के रूप में निर्विरोध निर्वाचित किया गया:

• बीसीसीआई के पूर्व अध्यक्ष शशांक मनोहर को अंतरराष्ट्रीय क्रिकेट परिषद (ICC) का स्वतंत्र अध्यक्ष चुना गया है। उन्हें दूसरे कार्यकाल के लिए निर्विरोध निर्वाचित किया गया।
• मनोहर को वर्ष 2016 में पहली बार आईसीसी का स्वतंत्र अध्यक्ष चुना गया था और अब निर्विरोध निर्वाचित होने के बाद वह अगले 2 साल तक इस पद पर बने रहेंगे।

चीन के जिया बोयु दोनों पैर गंवाने के बाद नेपाल की ओर से माउंट एवरेस्ट पर चढ़ने वाले पहले व्यक्ति बने:

• करीब चार दशक पहले अपने दोनों पैर गंवा देने वाले चीन के जिया बोयु (69) 14 मई 2018 को एवरेस्ट फतह करने में कामयाब हो गए। 8,848 मीटर ऊंची चोटी पर पहुंचने के लिए बोयु ने पांचवी बार प्रयास किया था।
• पहली बार 1975 में एवरेस्ट चढ़ते हुए खराब मौसम और शीतदंश के कारण उनके पैरों ने काम करना बंद कर दिया था। इसके बाद 1996 में ब्लड कैंसर के कारण घुटने से नीचे उनके दोनों पैर काटने पड़े थे।
• जिया के अलावा न्यूजीलैंड के मार्क इंग्लिश कृत्रिम पैरों से एवरेस्ट पर चढ़ने वाले एकमात्र व्यक्ति हैं। उन्होंने 2006 में यह सफलता हासिल की थी। उन्होंने तिब्बत की तरफ से चढ़ाई की थी। जबकि जिया ने यह चढ़ाई नेपाल की ओर से की।

President inaugurates a mutant variety of DUBRAJ rice developed by BARC

• President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated an integrated centre for crisis management (ICCM) at the iconic Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Mumbai that will help the nation respond more effectively to chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear emergencies.
• Among the other facilities that were inaugurated on the same day include a metal fuel pin fabrication facility jointly developed by BARC and the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research at Kalpakkam, near Chennai, that can increase plutonium production in fast breeder reactors.
• The Department of Atomic Energy also presented a high-yielding dwarf variety of Dubraj mutant rice to the president. This is the 43rd high-yielding crop variety developed by BARC.

President launches 12 champion services sectors

• President Ram Nath Kovind launched 12 champion services sectors, the list of 12 includes business areas with potential for drawing global attention and investment, as well as boosting growth and employment. It also aims to optimise India’s skills and knowledge resources.
• The services sector contributes 61 per cent in gross value added and with young population and large talent pool, India has natural advantages in these sectors. India's global services exports stood at 3.4 per cent in 2016.
• By 2025, India hopes to double the size of its GDP to USD 5 trillion and of this...the services sector could be a USD 3 trillion contributor. Out of this number, the government estimates that the Internet economy, incorporating e-commerce and other applications, could be as high as USD 1 trillion.

International

Max Thunder: US-South Korea Joint Military drill begins

• The regular US-South Korea joint military exercise known as "Max Thunder" is running for 15 days, from May 11th through the 25th, mainly at air bases in Osan, outside Seoul, and in Kunsan in the country's southwest.
• The exercise began in 2009 with the aim of better coordinating the air forces of the 2 nations. Some 100 warplanes are involved, including 8 F-22 stealth fighters, which the US military has deployed to the joint drill for the first time.

US formally inaugurated its embassy in Jerusalem

• The United States has formally opened its embassy in Jerusalem amid deadly protests in the Gaza Strip.
• The move followed a December 2017 decision by US President Donald Trump to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital and relocate the US mission there from Tel Aviv.
• All 86 countries with diplomatic missions in Israel were invited to the embassy opening, and 33 confirmed attendance.

India releases grant for river training & construction of embankments in Nepal

• India has released grant of NRs. (Nepalese Rupees) 18.07 crore for river training and construction of embankments along Lalbakeya, Bagmati and Kamla rivers in Nepal.
• The river training and embankment works in the Lalbakeya, Bagmati and Kamla rivers in Nepal aimed at flood control and water resources management, which benefit several million people inhabiting in the watershed of these rivers in India and Nepal.
• Since 2008 the Government of India has given NRs. 4.68 billion to Nepal for the river training and embankment works. India remains committed to continue working closely with Nepal for further cooperation in the field of river training, flood control and water resources management in these and other rivers.

India 3rd largest solar market in world: Mercom

• Mercom Communications India, reported India emerged as the third largest solar market in the world in 2017 behind China and the US.
• As per the report, India set a new record with 9.6 GW of solar installations in 2017, which was more than double the 4.3 GW installed in 2016.
• The robust growth boosted the country's total solar installed capacity to 19.6 GW as of December 2017. In 2017, larger players started consolidating their positions at the top as India quickly emerged as one of the most important solar markets in the world for suppliers and vendors.

Chinese state-run bank launches India-dedicated investment fund

• China's largest bank, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), has launched the country's first India-dedicated publicly offered investment fund.
• The fund, named the ICBC Credit Suisse India Market Fund, will "invest in exchange-traded funds listed on more than 20 exchanges in Europe and the US that are based on the Indian market.
• It will invest in the future of the Indian economy and track the distribution of the industrial structure across the Indian market.

Scientists develop FingerPing system allowing users to type with gestures

• Scientists have developed smart rings and wristbands that can allow users to type on mobile devices using hand gestures.
• Using acoustic chirps emitted from a ring and received by a wristband the system is able to recognize 22 different micro finger gestures that could be programmed to various commands.
• The system can accuratly recognise hand poses using the 12 bones of the fingers and digits '1' through '10' in American Sign Language (ASL).
• The system is called FingerPing. Unlike other technology that requires the use of a glove or a more obtrusive wearable, this technique is limited to just a thumb ring and a watch.

• The ring produces acoustic chirps that travel through the hand and are picked up by receivers on the watch.

Shashank Manohar elected unopposed as ICC chairman for second term

• Former BCCI president Shashank Manohar will expectedly serve a second term as the independent chairman of the International Cricket Council after he was elected unopposed by the governing body's Board.
• Manohar, who became the first independent ICC Chairman in 2016, will continue for a second two-year term following his unopposed election.

Chinese Xia Boyu first double amputee to climb Mt Everest

• Chinese climber and double amputee has scaled Everest at his fifth attempt - 43 years after he lost both his feet climbing the mountain.
• Xia Boyu, aged 69, became the first amputee to reach the peak of the world’s tallest mountain from the Nepal side.
• Mr Xia tried another three times to climb Everest - with his last attempt in 2016 ending just 94m from the summit due to bad weather. However, last month he became the first double amputee to get a permit after the government performed a u-turn.
